WEEKLY TOP ELECTRONIC CHARTS: FEBRUARY 2012, VOL. 37

This week’s chart not only displays a wide breadth of genres but also shows us the global effect of EDM. The pride of Egypt, Aly & Fila, produce a trance anthem. Dirty Dutch star Afrojack partners with Shermanology for a banger . Newcomers Space Rockerz feature Ellie Lawson for a track that isn’t “So Out Of Reach” of being a breakthrough.

1. ALY & FILA, UMMET OZCAN “200 – FSOE 200 ANTHEM” [UMMET OZCAN MIX] (FUTURE SOUND OF EGYPT)

Release Date: 2012-01-23

Just when you think Aly & Fila surely could not trump their trance anthem “We Control The Sun”, they may have just done that with “200”. Already receiving much praise from Armin van Buuren’s “A State of Trance”, this track is steadily climbing the charts. Right now, it truly is the #1 EDM track out there.

“200” showcases the patented Future Sound of Egypt production style. Operaesque vocals mixed with a solid build. Than out of nowhere, a dynamic drop into an intense bass bending chorus. Ummet Ozcan’s remix takes the track to the next level with additional spark.

Aly & Fila are already ranked very high according to the latest DJ Mag poll. They are truly prodigies in the arena of trance. Future Sound of Egypt is a label to watch as they continue to procure talent.

2. AFROJACK, SHERMANOLOGY “CAN’T STOP ME” [CLUB MIX] (WALL RECORDINGS)

Release Date: 2012-01-23

The title to this track couldn’t ring any more true; Afrojack at this point can’t be stopped. Nick van de Wall (Afrojack) is the leading force behind the dirty dutch scene at this point. This latest collaboration somewhat resembles a Swedish-style idea, but at the same time stays true to its Dutch roots.

Fellow Dutch duo Shermanology breathe life to the track, with their Soul and Jazz inspired input. Electro chords and basslines are present along most of the track. There is a brief moment of zen, where strong vocals take over.

Currently this track is #1 overall on Beatport, which is an accomplishment in itself. Afrojack is really having an amazing year, just recently releasing “Lionheart”. Shermanology has also increased their exposure thanks to this hit and previous collaboration with Avicii. This is a must-have track for any DJ.

3. NITROUS OXIDE, SPACE ROCKERZ FEAT. ELLIE LAWSON “SO OUT OF REACH” [NITROUS OXIDE REMIX] (AMSTERDAM TRANCE RECORDS)

Release Date: 2012-01-23

What an impressive track by newcomers Space Rockerz, an American DJ duo out of California. The production is phenomenal. The vocal selection is beautiful. The remixer is impeccable.

This effort is somewhat reminiscent of fellow American DJs Tritonal. It has a light airy feel, with a great Anjunabeats twist provided by Nitrous Oxide. Ellie Lawson’s contribution on the vocals are pure bliss.

I expect Space Rockerz to continue to grow and expand. They really have something going here, and have the chance to make a name for themselves in the trance scene.

4. ØRJAN NILSEN “LUCKY STRIKE” [ORIGINAL MIX] (ARMIND)

Release Date: 2011-01-23

Ørjan Nilsen is currently in “beast mode”. I wonder if this guy ever leaves the studio. The past year he has been pumping out quality productions like an assembly line.

This is power trance at its best. “Lucky Strike” is unique as it utilizes some soft organs and a light vocal loop in the build. Once the drop hits, the BPM’s keep increasing. Is there even a question why Armin van Buuren has openly placed his stamp of approval on this track?

Nilsen has a chance this year to crack the top 20 in the DJMag rankings. He currently is probably the hardest working DJ in studio. Norway should be proud of their stud talent.

5. IAN CAREY, BRASCO, TIMBALAND, ROSETTE, CAZZETTE “AMNESIA” [CAZZETTE ANOTHER SUGAR HUNT MIX] (SPINNIN RECORDS)

Release Date: 2011-01-23

If you put enough big names on a track, it usually results in a monster, or at the very least, some good publicity. In this case its’ a big hit in both the pop and EDM genre. Ian Carey combines efforts with Brasco, Timbaland, Rosette and CAZZETTE for hit single “Amnesia”.

The vocals are great on this track, thanks to a stellar effort by Canadian singer Rosette. Avicii product CAZZETTE totally remixes this track, making it a dubstep/electro house bass binger. Adding a slight hip hop element is Timbaland, who is not shy to to experiment in different genres.

This is a big deal for the EDM scene, as it incorporates various genres. It brings us back to the days of Nelly Furtado toying with dance music. No matter what version of “Amnesia” you listen to from the EP, fans really can’t go wrong.
