This week EDM Charts welcomes all-star vocalist Fiora to the site! Find out more on her recent collaborations, upcoming tours and how she became deeply involved with music to the classical sense!

Fiora, thank you so much for taking time out of your productions and traveling to sit down and visit with EDM Charts! Take a moment to tell us some more about yourself, such as where you’re from, how you got involved with music and how you are where you are now.

Well i was born and grew up in Launceston, Tasmania – a beautiful and somewhat isolated place. I studied classical music from a young age, violin and piano and then eventually classical singing but I always felt drawn to singing – i always sang. I loved all kinds of music; pop, dance, hip hop, jazz, classical. As i got older i experimented with them all in one way or another. I eventually studied classical voice at the Queensland conservatorium and spent a few years as a professional classical/opera singer but had the urge to make my own music. I started writing music for a kids tv show and making my own projects and eventually started working a lot with dj’s in dance/electronic music when i moved to berlin in 2009.

Your biggest splash most recently is being the featured vocalist on Armin van Buuren’s new single “Waiting For Tonight”. How did you and Armin come up with the concept?

I had spent a day in the studio with Armin and Benno (de Goeij.) They played me a number of track ideas they’d been working on and I took some home to Berlin. The one I felt instantly connected to was a track Armin had named “go where the light is brightest” – just as a placeholder file name. I had had the lyric “waiting for the night” kicking around my thoughts and when I got home I got on the mic, put the track on and it all kind of came out at once. To be honest I remember suddenly singing out that chorus and at the same time kind of – noticing myself doing it and feeling very surprised. In a good way though

You’ve had a chance to work with some amazing DJs such as Armin, Antillas, Moguai, and Markus Schulz to name a few. We know every collaboration is special, but is there one DJ you’ve worked with that really sticks out and is memorable?

As a singer in electronic music I feel more like a visitor to the different sound worlds of producers rather than beholden to one particular style. Of course every single collaboration is a special process and I’m honoured to have worked with everyone you mentioned. Recently I started working a lot with Tensnake and that has been a lot of fun and something totally different. It’s a very different end of the electronic music spectrum but I love seeing how different influences impact me creatively. Tensnake is incredibly musical, his music has so much personality; sexy, fun, beautiful – ultimately very melodic so I felt very much at home. We ended up writing a lot of songs together in a very short space of time so we got to really develop “our” writing identity which was great. You’ll get to hear a lot of these songs on his album release later this year.

Your talent and collaborations have allowed you to be considered in most EDM circles as a top #10 vocalist. Describe why your vocal style separates you from others.

That’s very kind of you to say. I think coming from a classical background plays a big part in the way I create what I sing. I grew up on a lot of orchestral music and played the violin so I sometimes use the voice more like an instrument contributing to the whole, with melodies fitting into the spaces between the drums and the synths, rather than going over the top of the existing music. I try to create my own kind of flow. When lyrics, melody and rhythm are all working together in relation to the track with nothing jarring – I find emotion can find its way through.

What is one artist that you haven’t worked with and would like to, and why?

Fauntleroy – he’s an incredible songwriter, such imaginative picture-painting and sassy lyrics, he also seems to be very gracious and humble.

You’ve worked with a few different record labels, with probably most notably Armada. What’s it like working with what most consider the #1 dance label in the world?

Just so professional. Armada have a fantastic team who work extremely hard. It’s such a pleasure to work with them. As an artist you can just focus on doing your best for the job at hand.

Will you be touring/doing any live vocals this summer?

Yes. I’ve been touring with Armin recently on his Intense tour and starting to do my own solo shows. This week I start performing with Tensnake. First in IMS ibiza on May 24th, then we’ll be performing at Vivid Festival in Sydney June 8th.

Are there any projects in the near future that you can hint on?

Well – I’m currently finishing a solo album. Stylistically it’s veering away from dance music so that’s definitely keeping life interesting. Until that’s ready I might have a little track with Arty coming up

Festival season kicks it off big this weekend with EDC NYC! Dirty South showcases some “heart” with the next big thing. Bloc Party is brilliantly remixed by Digitalism for the “Truth”. Cirez D stays on the charts with some big “drums”.

Description: One of the biggest DJs to come from the land down under takes over the #1 spot on this week’s chart with the Michael Brun Remix of “Your Heart”. This progressive house hit features unbelievable builds and amazing vocals thanks to Joe Gil, who has really made a splash on this song. The song is truly uplifting and the track itself has harmonic bass and synths. This is well deserving of the top spot.

Description: UK rock group Bloc Party, who has seen there fair share of EDM remixes, get redone by remix master Digitalsim under Toolroom Records. Digitalism stays true to the original meaning of the track highlighting vocals from Kele. The remix is much more electronic sounding and the added bassline gives the track some extra vibe. Both artists have taken different paths; but both have seen a large amount of success and will continue to do s.

3. CIREZ D “DRUMS IN THE DEEP” [ORIGINAL MIX] (MOUSEVILLE) Release Date: 2013-5-6

Description: The Swedish house master Cirez D AKA Eric Prydz once again is on the charts with “Drums in the Deep”. This techno release again goes right back to Prydz’ roots of industrial techno under his label Mouseville. Deep and dark filtered vocal loops and steady bassline give it the true warehouse feel. It’s great to see an artist be successful doing something that is different and not so mainstream. 2013 is clearly the year of Prydz.

4. REX MUNDI “HIDDEN TREASURES” [ORIGINAL MIX] (COLDHARBOUR RECORDINGS) Release Date: 2013-5-13

Description: Up and coming artist Rex Mundi, under Markus Schulz’ Coldharbour Recordings, pumps out a powerful trance banger in “Hidden Treasures”. The track is dark and chilling, which is the patented style of the label. There are some great builds highlighted by some airy vocals chops. With some midlevel bass and the track highlights again another great trance hit with this respected label.

5. FCL “IT’S YOU” [MK REMIX] (DEFECTED) Release Date: 2013-5-6

Genre: DEEP HOUSE

Origin: UNKNOWN

Description: This week’s final track highlights DJ duo FCL’s “It’s You” remixed by MK. This track goes down the deep house route, with some jazzy vibe and great vocals. There’s honestly not a ton of info out there on FCL, but it seems this track has been remixed quite a few times. The techy beats and smooth flow make it a sure play in any down tempo lounge.

Description: John Dahlback is somewhat of an underrated performer in the EDM realm. However, he’s also one of the most consistent producers out there. With his first release under Nicky Romero’s Protocol Recordings label, “Nuke” is literally a dirty music bomb. With massive bass and big time synths, this is a solid first release under the new label.

3. ESTIVA, DANIEL KANDI, SARAH RUSSELL “CHANGING THE WORLD” [ESTIVA REMIX] (ENHANCED RECORDINGS) Release Date: 2013-5-6

Description: This track features Estiva’s massive rework of Daniel Kandi’s “Changing The World”. The track is so well re-done, as puts a great emphasis on Sara Russell’s charming vocals, and in addition the bass is even changed up helping give the listener a different perspective. This rework is a great collaboration of technical skills and harmonious vocals.

Description: The legendary Finnish duo of Super8 & Tab hits the scene once again with a new trance drop under Anjunabeats in “L.A.” with Juventa on the remix. It a track that flows seamlessly in and out of builds. It’s much more harmonious then a banger, but the evenflow of the track is well appreciated. As usual, the track is well put together, which is nothing less than what we would expect from these legends.

The bass driven production of Drumcode simply make it the best techno label in the game, and a top 10 one in the industry.

With production assistance provided by legendary producer Niles Rodgers and vocal assistance from crooner Pharrell Williams, the track is neo-synth to its finest. Daft Punk are legends because they are the best producers the genre has ever seen. Even though their tracks slide a bit more to the pop side, you cannot deny their acute attention to detail and keen sense of selecting assistance on their album productions.

Description: Mark Knight has been absolutely destroying 2013 with massive releases, not only from himself, but his label Toolroom Knights. The track is obviously a clever attribution to pop start Kylie Minogue, however this rendition is has a classic bassline and wonderful bouncy feel. With a great compliment, the music video for the track is as clever as Knight’s legendary productions. This is definitely a track for the summer of 2013.

Description: The Dutch are in the house on this last smash electro house hit from two legendary producers in the game: Laidback Luke and Hardwell. The track has both of their trademarked bouncy Dutch feels. It was actually debuted at Ultra Music Festival this spring and was very popular online on YouTube right away. If you’re looking for something chaotic then this is your track.

Description: Jaytech continues to shock and awe trance followers. Whether it is his young age, having been classically been trained in piano or his non-commercial sound; there are plenty of factors why to be a fan. If there’s one thing you will always hear on a Jaytech track, it’s a piano. In addition to that the melody and harmonies are perfectly complimented, with a clever little vocal chop to give the track some additional life.

Description: We welcome a newcomer to the weekly charts with Aussie Jungle Jim. His new electro house track “Black Wolf” is very animalistic. The track hits absurdly hard with some hardened bass complimented by an actual vocal of a howling wolf. The clever vocal chopping also adds to the the track, even giving it a very light trap feel. This track real stands out as something different from the electro house genre.

Description: Static Revenger hops back into the charts, but this time with a house friendly remix thanks to Italian producer Tradelove. Miss Palmer adds a sexy vibe to the club friendly track with her basic yet charming vocals. The quick baseline and funky feel makes this track a sure fire play in any smaller space. Static Revenger has been doing it for years, and this is a great addition to his lengthy folio.

4. ALAN BRAXE, THE SPIMES “ONE MORE CHANCE” [LIFELIKE REMIX] (SCION AV) Release Date: NA

Description: The one item that the EDM genre is truly missing is soul and funk fueled house hits. Many hits will soon be coming from upcoming releases by Daft Punk and Basement Jaxx, however this track is a nice fill in. French DJ/Producer welcomes the indie group The Spimes to add on some vocals to this funky house release. In addition, the backspin sound of scratching vinyl actually sounds legit on the track, giving it a slight hip hop element. This is definitely something fresh and different, and a pleasure to hear.

5. BREACH “JACK” [ORIGINAL MIX] (DIRTYBIRD) Release Date: 2013-4-1

Description: We end the countdown with yet another great house track, “Jack”. Breach is actually an alias for Ben Westbeech, a well known UK producer. This track is much more minimal in nature with a steady soft bassline and spoken filtered vocals. The track title speaks for itself; get down when you get loose on the dancefloor. This is yet another great house track to come out in early 2013.

Au5: Thanks so much for catching up with EDM Charts about your recent projects. Tell fans where you’re from and how you got involved with music.

I have lived in New Jersey my entire life. Since age 4 I have been involved with music, classically trained in piano as well as other instruments, and constant exposure to multiple genres, both old and contemporary.

You’re a very young artist in the EDM game right now by only being 20 years old? Since you’re just beginning, who do you cite as your biggest influences; whether that be EDM, Hip-Hop, singers, etc?

I have had many different artists that have influenced me throughout my years of producing, which tend to vary depending on the style I am exploring during that time. As of now my biggest influences are BT, Koven, Madeon, and Seven Lions.

Your big release right now that is catching a lot of attention is “Crystal Mathematics”. How did you come up with the concept of track?

The concept behind Crystal Mathematics is metaphoric for the pure, fractalline nature of our infinite universe. It’s open to interpretation for the listener really.

Shaz Sparks who is featured on vocals on “Crystal Mathematics” has been rising as an upcoming vocalist. What was it like working with her?

Working with Shaz and her producer, Robbie, was a very straightforward, and harmonious experience. Right from the first draft, Shaz nailed the lyrics and vocals; she complimented the vibe of the track flawlessly.

You recently were the winner of the Beatport Remix Contest where you had a winning remix of Seven Lions “Days To Come”? Would you call that a turning point; and what was that experience like getting legitimate recognition from Beatport?

I always feel that there are many turning points on my journey in the EDM scene and in life in general. Last year my debut release on Rottun put my name on the map. In this case the winning of the remix was definitely a landmark and has been pushing my name pretty hard.

When listening to your sound some close comparisons people make are other “clean” sounding dubstep artists such as Xilent and Seven Lions? How would you describe your style.

I strive to combine the uplifting, melodic elements of trance with complex, heavy bass and sound design. My attempt is to merge both clean and pure with heavy and dirty.

Honestly I have never attended a single festival, so I really can’t say.

What vocalist/artist that you haven’t worked with would you like to in the near future?

I would love to collaborate with Viper artists Koven or Seven Lions, as they are 2 big influences for me and have been following them for over a year.

Are there any projects you are working on in the near future that you can fill us in on?

I have a forthcoming glitch-hop collaboration EP with Fractal on Adapted Records, as well as some other collab projects I can’t specify yet but am very excited about.

Description: In celebration of Pryda’s newest residency at Surrender Night Club in Las Vegas, this anthem showcases the darker side of Progressive House. This track is almost more techno per se than Progressive. It contains elements of symphonic instruments for a more dramatic aura, a pounding beat and plenty of electro synths. This is easily one of the top 5 overall tracks of 2013 and was a smash hit at Ultra Music Festival 2013.

Origin: RUSSIA

Description: Russian producer Cramp comes out with techy banger in A.d. 2030, which provides us with an insight into the distant future. The track is influenced heavily by the Far East with Indian instruments. The techno portion kicks in as the track speeds up into a quickened bass line. For someone who typically has been none as a trance producer, this is quite the transition into techno.

3. MAX GRAHAM, ALANA ALDEA “WHERE YOU ARE” [ORIGINAL MIX] (RE*BRAND) Release Date: 2013-3-25

Origin: CANADA

Description: Canadian trance producer resume has spanned quite a few years, with many hits. This latest vocal trance track featuring Alana Aldea, highlights emotions and the more progressive side of trance. Aldea does an amazing job on vocals, which can be attribute to her great track record of being a vocalist on various hit songs such as “Nothing Else Matters”. The melody is well-balanced on the track and aids in a warm sounding vibe.

4. NIC TOMS “PERFECT START” [ORIGINAL MIX] (FRACTION RECORDS) Release Date: 2013-4-1

Description: Nic Toms makes a smashing entrance into the big time arena of trance. Being only around 21 years old, “Perfect Start” has garnered great support from EDM legend Armin van Buuren. The track has a great drop into a solid bass line. The rest of this work of art is a groove that is comfortable to ride and follow. Watch out for this up and coming artist, as this release has opened up a lot of eyes.

5. ROBERTO CAPUANO “VERTIGO” [ORIGINAL MIX] (DRUMCODE) Release Date: 2013-3-11

Origin: ITALY

Description: Under legendary techno label Drumcode, young producer Roberto Capuano releases a massive techno banger in “Vertigo”. This track is clearly designed to a peak time hit that could surely get any crowd moving, especially at something similar to the Carl Cox MegaStructure at Ultra Music Festival in Miami. Echoed out piano chords and hi hats balance out the bass as the track grooves out. There’s a reason why Drumcode is the #1 techno label in the game.
