WEEKLY TOP ELECTRONIC CHARTS: NOVEMBER 2011, VOL. 28

30 Nov

1. ZEDD “STARS COME OUT” [ORIGINAL MIX] (Dim Mak Records)

Release Date: 2011-11-22

The young German Zedd, at only the age of 22, has busted out a skillful new electro house hit. This marks his third huge single to come out in 2011 with the others being “Shave It” and “Dovregubben”. This great song is not only festival ready, but is set for play at the club. Heather Bright also does a great job on vocals; don’t be surprised if you hear hear name on even more EDM songs.

2. MICHAEL CALFAN “RESURRECTION” [AXWELL’S RECUT CLUB VERSION] (Axtone Records)

Release Date: 2011-11-21

All I have to say, is that this is one of the smoother tracks I’ve listened to. Axwell’s work can clearly be seen on the track, as he has smoothed over transitions and added some epic drops. We really haven’t heard much from Axwell recently, to be specific “Heart is King” this summer. It’s good to see some fresh new talent on the scene with Calfan.

3. TIESTO, STEVE AOKI “TORNADO” [ORIGINAL MIX] (Dim Mak Records)

Release Date: 2011-11-15

The more and more I listen to this collaboration by Tiesto and Aoki, the more I enjoy it. Initially I thought there was too much abruptness to the the track. However, after giving the track another week, I’m starting to follow the flow. This is a high energy track, that will keep any crowd energized. It is best suited for the festival setup however.

4. KYAU & ALBERT “ARE YOU FINE” [ARTY REMIX] (Euphonic)

Release Date: 2011-11-21

The German DJ duo Kyau & Albert release a massive single remixed by Arty (AKA Russian Wonderkid). Even though they’re not on the Anjunabeats label, it sounds close enough to me to make it count. Arty is able to add the big “house” feel to the single. The original mix sounds good, but this remix just sounds and feels better. This is a great track that was featured at Trance Around The World 400 in Lebanon.

5. ABOVE & BEYOND “FORMULA ROSSA” [ORIGINAL MIX] (Anjunabeats)

Release Date: 2011-11-27

First off, in case you were wondering, Formula Rossa is actually the name of Ferrari’s rollercoaster in Ferrari Land in the United Arab Emirates. It is the world’s fastest roller coaster. The track is fashioned after that, being high energy that relies heavily on build ups, just like a rollercoaster. I’m sure this track will be in the top #5 on the Beatport trance charts before we know it. A&B just keep pushing out new material and style like no one else in the industry.

1. JOHN DÄHLBACK, ERIK HASSLE “ONE LAST RIDE” [TOMMY TRASH REMIX] (Mutants)

Release Date: 2011-10-11

The Swedish take over continues (even the vocalist Hassle is from Katrineholdm, Sweden). Dählback smashes this one out of the ballpark. This remix is an insanely ridiculous energetic track considering how vocal heavy it is. I recently heard this debut on Sander van Doorn’s “Identity” podcast. I love how the plucking beat blends with the rapid twisting of “dubsteppish” tones, that essentially represent an electric guitar on steroids. This track will easily work in the club and/or festival.

2. AFROJACK “LIONHEART” [ORIGINAL MIX] (WALL RECORDINGS)

Release Date: 2011-11-07

Afrojack stays put at #2 on this week’s countdown. Talk about some massive basslines! What we have here is what represent modern day electro house. This track is punch in style and dirty dutch to the core. One suggestion: Don’t find yourself in a mosh pit with this one.

3. GARETH EMERY, MARK FRISCH “INTO THE LIGHT” [BENJAMIN BATES REMIX] (GARUDA)

Release Date: 2011-11-14

This is an unbelievable remix off the “Northern Lights” album. I’ve personally never come across Benjamin Bates; but I can say he has blown me away with his obvious skill. This remix should garner widespread appeal as it has taken a trance track and added elements to make it a progressive house track. The portion of the track with the church organ is great, as it gives great focus to the inner soul of the song. This has festival written all over it. Emery yet again proves why he’s a top 20 DJ.

4. ALESSO “RAISE YOUR HEAD” [ORIGINAL MIX] (REFUNE RECORDS)

Release Date: 2011-11-16

Alesso is killing it in 2011! If it wasn’t for Avicii, Alesso would be the top newcomer of the year (for progressive house; Arty for trance). This track is actually shockingly a bit more on the dark side, with an element of evil to it. It works great, mixed with huge bass hits, and an electronic loop to kill for. Like I predicted last Spring, Alesso is here to stay and will be a top 30 DJ before you know it.

5. CHRIS LAKE ”SUNDOWN” [ORIGINAL MIX] (ULTRA)

Release Date: 2011-11-15

Featured recently as Pete Tong’s Essential Tune, “Sundown” is a stellar vocal progressive house track. A great beat mixed with some nice guitar. This is definitely a change up in style for Lake, as he often times nearly resembles deadmau5’s deep tracks. This track is similar in style to modern day Morgan Page. Great hit that you need to download.

1. KASKADE, SKRILLEX “LICK IT” [ORIGINAL MIX] (ULTRA)

Release Date: 2011-11-08

Well, what do we have here? Ah yes, a massive collaboration between Kaskade & Skrillex, on Kaskade’s new album “Fire & Ice”. Simply put, Progressive House meets Dubstep. The best part about the track is the energy behind it. Massive basslines manufactured by Skrillex are smoothly engineered over an instrumental loop by Kaskade. This will surely rock many concerts over this winter.

2. AFROJACK “LIONHEART” [ORIGINAL MIX] (WALL RECORDINGS)

Release Date: 2011-11-07

Afrojack’s newest single is a massive electro-banger, full of funky electronic quirks and tons of bass. Yes, this is the style that we all attribute to the Dutch sensation Afrojack. Having already been picked up on by Pete Tong’s Essential Tune, this track will soon be on the tracklist for many podcasts.

3. DADA LIFE “HAPPY VIOLENCE” [VOCAL EXTENDED MIX] (SO MUCH DADA)

Release Date: 2011-10-31

Dada Life’s “Happy Violence” stays in the top #5 for another week. I swear these guys come up with some of the most unique electronic sounds. They must spend a massive time toying around with their MIDI controller and Ableton Live. Fear the DADA!

4. ABOVE & BEYOND, MIGUEL BOSE “SEA LO QUE SEA SERA” [MYON & SHANE 54 SUMMER OF LOVE MIX] (ANJUNABEATS)

Release Date: 2011-10-23

There isn’t a track out there that defines “global” more than A&B’s new single. First off the vocals are done entirely in Spanish by Miguel Bose. Second, the instrumental has that chill tranquil sound that only A&B can produce. In case you’re wondering the title translates to “Whatever Will Be, Will Be”…or in my tongue “It Is What It Is”.

5. HEATBEAT ”ROSES NEVER CRY” [ORIGINAL MIX] (SOUNDPIERCING [ARMADA])

Release Date: 2011-10-03

This is the first time Heatbeat has graced my top #5. It also is the first time an Argentian DJ has made the list (they’re actually a duo made up of Agustin Servente and Matias Faint). What a great trance hit we have here. A melodic intro that’s integrated into a pounding bassline harmonized over by some graceful female vocals. I give many props to Armada’s R&D for finding these guys.

I would like to end this entry by stating, for those who are wondering, that yes Avicii “levels” is not on this week’s list and will not be on any future ones. It was in the top #5 in the beginning of summer. You probably have noticed it “topping” the charts now. The reason being is that it finally was legally released by his new label LE7ELS. Enjoy this week’s list!

1. DADA LIFE “HAPPY VIOLENCE” [VOCAL EXTENDED MIX] (So Much Dada)

Release Date: 2011-10-31

Let me first say that this Swedish duo are two of the craziest bastards I’ve seen on the music scene. Just check out their Twitter @dadalife and you’ll get my drift. Now, to the song! Featuring the typical electro house sound and tekkie tweaks common with Dada Life, this song makes a bold entry to #1 on the countdown. I’m not sure who does the vocals on this song, even though I’m pretty sure it is Luciana. Definitely one of the most unique #1’s to make the list.

2. DIGITALISM “CIRCLES” [ERIC PRYDZ REMIX] (Pryda Friends)

Release Date: 2011-10-24

Digitalism stays on the countdown for the second week in a row. This is a major collabo, with the original “Super Swede” Eric Prydz. I’m really fascinated with the mesmorizing loop. Now that’s what I call progressive house! It will be interesting to follow Digitalism to see if he makes an even bigger name for himself.

3. ORJAN NILSEN “VIKING” [ORIGINAL MIX] (Armind)

Release Date: 2011-10-24

Yes, Orjan is the very first Norweigan to make the countdown. Nilsen is 28, but looks like he is about 14. Disregard his looks. Viking is a hardhitting trance banger. You can tell Nilsen is skillful with the programming, as the chords are so tightly tuned and arranged.

4. CRYSTAL WATERS, YOLANDA BE COOL “LE BUMP” [CLUB MIX] (Sweat It Out!)

Release Date: 2011-10-19

Yolanda Be Cool brings us a funky fresh house hit. This is a strong attempt to follow up their world wide hit “We No Speak Americano”. They make this possible by lining up Crystal Waters on the vocals, who has been featured on an endless list of house singles. Upbeat in style, “Le Bump” is a character filled song that tops the house genre right now.

5. BASTO ”AGAIN AND AGAIN” [EXTENDED MIX] (Spinnin Records)

Release Date: 2011-10-03

Well, another first time appearance for a new country! This time we visit Belgium for Basto and his big hit “Again and Again”. This has progressive house written all overt. I love the brief and minimal mix in of vocals reciting the title of the song. Some people say this is a rip off of Avicii. Others say this was the theme song for Wonderland 2011. I say it is legit.
