WEEKLY TOP ELECTRONIC TUNES: JANUARY 2012, VOL. 36

Respected names and faces take over the charts this week; especially those from Australia. Aussie producer tyDi partners with DJ Rap for some spectacular trance. Partners in crime from “Down Under”, Dirty South and Kate Elsworth pump out a massive single . Kyau & Albert have a hit remixed by some of the best in the business, Stoneface & Terminal.

1. DJ RAP, tyDi, MAISON & DRAGEN “TALKING TO MYSELF” [MAISON & DRAGEN REMIX] (S107 RECORDINGS)

Release Date: 2012-01-23

“Talking To Myself” is quite the collaborative effort. Producing it is one of the younger DJ’s on the scene in tyDi only being 24. Partnering in the production is 42 year old DJ Rap who has been in the drum and bass scene for awhile. Then to take it over the top, Maison & Dragen are contracted to to the remix, one of the quickest rising duos in the game.

With all these elements in place, this is one unique production. You can hear the flow of trance, clearly coming from tyDi. In combination, are drum and bass hints, which are mellowed out by Maison & Dragen. The vocals on the track are smooth and soulful, giving it a deep and powerful presence.

tyDi has really been making a name for himself of lately. He has had some huge hits this past year with “Acting Crazy” and his weekly podcast “Global Soundsytem” continues to grow and develop. Don’t be shocked if tyDi continues to inch closer to the top 20 DJs on the DJMag top 100.

2. DIRTY SOUTH, THOMAS GOLD, KATE ELSWORTH “EYES WIDE OPEN” [ORIGINAL MIX] (PHAZING)

Release Date: 2012-01-23

Dirty South, Thomas Gold, and Kate Elsworth are like the Pythagorean theorem; it adds up to the “right” amount every time. If you thought the summer smasher “Alive” was big, “Eyes Wide Open” might be bigger. The flow and feeling packed into this song show this team’s flawless production skills and instincts.

It is hard to say what shines more on this track; the instrumental or the vocals? Kate Elsworth brings us nothing less than perfection with her impeccable vocals that breathe life into the electro. Australian Dirty South and German Thomas Gold produce a live track. It is uplifting and could easily pass as a summer Ibiza hit, even in the middle of January.

More than likely this track will end up being #1 on the Beatport charts. At the very least, it will be a “must-have” track to be part of any DJ’s set. There’s no doubt that this trio should get together and produce an entire album or an EP. It would be great to see them work together on an extended time frame.

3. STONEFACE & TERMINAL, KYAU & ALBERT “MADE OF SUN” [STONEFACE & TERMINAL REMIX] (EUPHONIC)

Release Date: 2012-01-16

German duo Kyau & Albert get remixed by some of the best in the business, Stoneface & Terminal. It is part of their “15 Years” series. The original track was released in 2005.

The track is transformed from pure trance, to a somewhat of a dubstep powered hybrid. Many filters are added to the vocals as well, to add a sense of acceleration. Deep basslines are hit, giving the remixed version more power and relevance to modern electro than the original.

Kyau & Albert have been around for awhile in the game. This past year has been impressive with a few big hits. Make sure to check out their podcast “Euphonic Sessions”, as it reflects their skill in song selection and mixing style

4. HARDWELL “SPACEMAN” [ORIGINAL MIX] (REVEALED RECORDINGS)

Release Date: 2011-01-23

Hardwell continues his rise to fame, at an exceedingly rapid pace. His new single “Spaceman” just adds one more notch to his belt. This track is filled with energy and electro house, which we have come to love with Hardwell.

This track is actually somewhat reminiscent of his recent single titled “Cobra”. What we find here is some high BPM, bass infused beats. To give the subwoofers a rest, there are portions of the track which allow for buildup. This track is perfect for a large festival, as it has the energy to get a crowd going.

It can be openly stated that Hardwell is a young prodigy. He’s dominating the game with his EP’s and making a name for himself on Sirius radio with his show “Hardwell On Air”. Where he might impress you the most is on tour, at huge gigs such as Electric Daisy Carnival and Electric Zoo.

5. RICHARD GREY, FEDERICO SCAVO “LADY” [FEDERICO SCAVO REMIX] (TIGER RECORDS)

Release Date: 2011-12-15

Usually tracks released more than a month ago don’t make this chart. An exception is made for this one, as there’s no denying its increasing popularity. Talk about a remix of a classic. “Lady” originally released by Modjo in 2001 gets a makeover.

If you compare the original to the remix, the best comparison that can be developed is Daft Punk morphs into Fedde le Grand infused house. The track is pure house bliss. The vocal loop is very catchy, and there’s enough bassline to give the track a bit of an edge.

Richard Grey has really only been producing straight house tracks, which have definitely limited his exposure in America. It has nothing to do with lack of skill, but more so the fact that house has had much less exposure than progressive house, electro house, and trance. This is a great big room shaker that is dominating the charts currently.
