EDM Charts keeps it rolling by welcoming Toolroom Records super-talent Gina Star! We get a chance to see what her big projects are and how she got involved with the EDM industry. Sit back, relax and discover even more about this bright talent.
Gina, thanks for taking time out of the schedule to sit down and talk with EDM Charts! We’re excited to be able to talk to such a talented artist. Take a second to tell us a bit more about where you’re from, how you got in to EDM, etc…
I’m originally from Dallas, Texas and moved to LA in 2006. In 2009 I moved to the UK for a while, and now I’m back in LA. I remember I was always trying to figure out a way to get into clubs way before I was old enough to go, I was crazy about going to raves, everyone was at the time. I fell in love with House music and how much energy it created. One night I was at a party with my DJ friends and I just decided that I didn’t want to be in the crowd any more, so I bought seven records and taught myself how to play. I did my first gig at an open turntable night in Houston, Texas and played for half an hour with those 7 records.
We previously asked Linnea Schössow this, but what has/is it like being a female artist in the industry, or is there really no difference whatsoever?
To be honest, I haven’t really given it that much thought. I don’t focus on the whole male female thing, as it just attracts more stereotypes that I don’t think apply to me. I want to make great records, the same as any other producer.
One of your biggest remixes was the Gina Star remix of “Beautiful World”. Describe the concept behind the remix and what it is like to collaborate with Mark Knight/Tiësto?
The original came out last year, then Toolroom was putting together a remix package with about six mixes and they decided to release my mix on the Toolroom compilation ‘Miami 2012’.

You just started a brand new Podcast: “Gina Star Podcast”. Describe the show and your goals with this project. Also, what can listeners expect to hear music-wise on this show?
Each month I’m going to count down my top 10 records and also include a couple of past favorites. It’s mostly stuff that I play in my sets (progressive house) but sometimes there are great records in other genres that I feel should be showcased, like maybe deep house, indie dance, or drum and bass. I talk a little bit about each selection and I hope that listeners will get a chance to know my personality better.
Are you currently working on any large upcoming projects, outside of the Podcast?
I’ve actually got about 7 tracks in the cue to be released this year, so I’ve been in the studio a lot lately. The tracks feature some great vocalists like Chris Willis, Marcella Detroit, Jonathan Mendelsohn, and Jussie Smollett.
Is there a DJ/Vocalist that you haven’t worked with that you’d really like produce with?
I’d love to work with Adam Levine, you don’t often find a pop singer that actually writes his own lyrics – and well. His high tenor voice really lends itself to dance music.
What is your favorite venue/festival to perform at? Also, where can fans see you live this summer?
I love playing at Ministry of Sound in London, the crowd is always really up for it and they love house music. This summer I’m looking forward to my first season in Ibiza!
