WEEKLY TOP ELECTRONIC CHARTS: AUGUST 2012, VOL. 67

29 Aug

Here we are, the last week of August, which just means the end of the month not an end to great music. Avicii “waits” for us with the “Last Dance”. Dirty South and Alesso keep us hopeful with “City of Dreams”. Hook N Sling and NERVO give use a “Reason” to listen to their latest monster collaboration.

1. AVICII “LAST DANCE” [ORIGINAL CLUB INSTRUMENTAL] (ONE MORE TUNE) Release Date: 2012-08-27

Avicii is back once again with the ill flavor! This time he drops “Save The Last Dance” which brings us back to the old school days of Avicii style wise. There’s no collaboration on vocals on the track, just pure genius on the instrumental. Considering how sick Avicii has been recently it’s a surprise he has been able to pump out a great hit like this.

The track is a blend between Sander van Doorn’s “Koko” and Avicii’s classic “Jailbait”. A pan flute straight from the jungles of South America is blended over a pounding gorgeous synth, that easily would smash any dance floor. It is full of energy, quick paced and something unique and genuine.

Avicii is really on top of his game, and hasn’t let up. He once again will be slated for a top #10 DJ this year in DJMag. There’s really no one stopping Avicii except the man himself.

2. DIRTY SOUTH, ALESSO, RUBEN HAZE “CITY OF DREAMS” [ORIGINAL MIX] (PHAZING) Release Date: 2012-08-27

Looking for a song with a great summer vibe. Well, you’ve came across the right one in Dirty South and Alesso’s newest smash hit “City of Dreams”. Dirty South, the lead artist on Phazing records gets together with rising star Alesso on this great progressive house track. To put the cherry on top, they landed the vocal talents of Ruben Haze to add to the embrace.

The track is built from the ground with smooth stylings of Dirty South, and is pushed over the edge with agressive beats from the young Swede Alesso. Ruben Haze truly does an amazing job with the vocals. His calming and deep styling give the track true character. In addition, the lyrics are very well written, talking about a missing love.

There is way too much talent on this track to not fail. It is a diverse grouping that is reflected throughout the various layers of the track. A great summer anthem it is.

CLASSIC COLLABORATION: PENDULUM “THE ISLAND” [STEVE ANGELLO, AN21, MAX VANGELI REMIX] (ONE MORE TUNE) Release Date: 2010-11-24

Well, try to think of a set in 2010 that did not have “The Island” on the set list…actually it really hasn’t disappeared as it is still found in many DJ sets. Pendulum’s “The Island” was marvelously remixed by Steve Angello, AN21 and Max Vangelli, in a way that mixed rock flavored stylings with hard electro. Rob Swire, who is on vocals is easily recognizable from “Ghosts N Stuff” from deadmau5.

“What are you waiting for?”. Amazing lyrics and singing are what sticks in everyone’s minds. Pendulum ended up being a perfect mix for the remixers from Size Records. It is anthem that is a great closer to any set. This track is what is great about EDM: the hybrid and blend of styles and genres.

If you have never checked out the Australian rock group Pendulum, you need to do so. They have much more high quality material outside of this track; this one just happens to be their best!

3. HOOK N SLING, NERVO “REASON” [ORIGINAL MIX] (SPINNIN RECORDS) Release Date: 2012-08-27

We’ve got a lot of thunder from down under on the track “Reason”. Hook N Sling and NERVO both hail from the land of Koalas. This track is some great progressive house that has a funky vibe and is friendly to the ears. The ladies of NERVO in addition take care of the vocals with their gorgeous voices.

Hook N Sling is fairly notorious for pumping out somewhat commercial tunes, but this collaboration resulted in an organic and authentic production. NERVO always kills it on vocals. They’re are one the few artists that perform their own vocals and produce their own beats a la Calvin Harris.

Both artists have clearly risen up the charts over the last couple years. NERVO does a great monthly radio show as well called “NERVO Nation” that you should check out on Sirius or their Soundcloud. Who says the Aussies don’t rock!

4. AMBA SHEPHERD, DYRO “SKY HIGH” [ORIGINAL MIX] (STRICTLY RHYTHM) Release Date: 2012-08-28

Yet again, another Dutch all-star appears to be rising out of the tulip country. Dyro collaborates with Aussie Amba Shepherd on his latest single “Sky High”. It is a unique blend of progressive house smashing into some intense electro house. It is a great follow up to Dyro’s latest hit “Top of the World”.

The track is what some are starting to refer to as a Dyro Bomb. Full of hardcore energy, topped of with great vocals. If you’re a bass person you get that with some pounding synths. If you’re more of a progressive person, you get a great build with the chorus that is dramatic and fufilling.

This track creates a great watch list of talent: Dyro is doing huge things on his latest hits. Amba Shepherd has a beautiful voice, and will be featured on many more tracks. “Sky High” is simply bubbling with talent and potential.

5. COSMIC GATE, CARY BROTHERS “WAKE YOUR MIND” [EXTENDED MIX] (BLACK HOLE RECORDINGS) Release Date: 2012-08-27

German DJs get together with Indie/alternative vocalists Cary Brothers on their latest track “Wake Your Mind”. Cosmic Gate as usual, pumps out some perfect trance. They also couldn’t have selected a better vocalist along their side. Cary Brothers simply capture the moment with their thoughtful and deep style.

The track has everything. A soft interlude, a well structured build, and a classic Cosmic Gate flow. The track is about as poppy as Cosmic Gate will get, but it stays very true to its trance roots.

Cosmic Gate simply never dissapoints. EDM Charts crew was lucky enough to see them perform live in Minneapolis where they laid down a wonderful set. This is a great song to add to a trance fans music library.
