To kick off the year end countdown we examine the top Deep House tracks of 2013. What a year for a genre that melded classic tunes with vibing beats. These tracks are placed into action with a guest mix from DJ Slim Tim.
#1 – Mark Knight – Your Love (Original Mix) [Toolroom Records]
With what may be the #1 track of the year regardless of genre, house legend Mark Knight unleashed an epic grooving tune this summer. With a cheeky play on Kylie Minogue’s “Your Love” Knight captures the essence of the past and connects it with the present, with the Ibiza styling and technologically savvy beats. The track is sexy and sultry, which explains its dominance in club play. It surely has been the year of not only Knight, but his label Toolroom Records, with countless releases and dominance on the Beatport charts.
#2 – Dusky – Careless [Aus Music]
What a year for Dusky, with two massive tunes in 2013 with “Nobody Else” and “Careless”. We had to choose one and “Careless” was the most brilliant production in our minds, with a wide assortment of instrumentals and a vibe that’s untouchable. The duo of Dusky truly captures pure soul with clever vocal loops and chops, followed with a sneaky chime and bells to accompany the background instrumental. Their dominance is clearly recognized by productions under respected labels in Aus and Anjunadeep.
#3 – Maya Jane Coles – Burning Bright ft. Kim Ann Foxman (Joyce Muniz Remix) [I/AM/ME]
What a release from 2012 Beatport Artist of the Year Maya Jane Coles. The remix provided by house all-star Joyce Muniz gives the track the right amount of pepper and pace to make it the perfect play in the club. The vocals provided by Kim Ann Foxman are stunning and blend perfectly with the overall feel of the track. The background vocal loop chop that runs the instrumental shows her indisputable skill set in productions. Whether she’s producing or performing live on Boileroom, Coles is well deserving of this spot on the countdown.
#4 – Green Velvet – Bigger Than Prince (Hot Since 82 Remix) [Circus Recordings]
Green Velvet has been in the game awhile, this time dabbling in some deeper house, thanks to the remix by up and coming producer Hot Since 82, who has been crushing 2013 as well in his own right. “Bigger Than Prince” is a clever go around in styling of a la, Prince. The beat itself is a bit more deeper and darker, with a slight twist of humorous lyric play. This is a brilliant underground track that has found its way into mainstream exposure.
#5 – Pet Shop Boys ft Example – Thursday (Tensnake Remix) [x2]
Pet Shop Boys are an electronic duo that have been around for years upon years. This recent track with Example remixed by Tensnake is a very deep take on the original. With a lot of bending of tones, vocal looping and a bigger bassline, the track is exfoliating with character and originality. In addition, the compilation with Example is huge for notoriety, as they are loved all over the globe in a more pop/commercial sense. We couldn’t be prouder than to have a legendary duo round out our Deep House countdown.
