Alex & Raphael, thanks for taking time to catch up with us! Tell us where you guys are from, how you met and got into music?

Hey, thanks for having us! Well we met here in Brussels back in the summer of 2013. We both had respective projects, but we clicked well and decided to collaborate together and started making music. 1.5 years later, here we are as The Checkup.

Alex: I began music school at 8 where I learned classical piano first and then some jazz piano and bass guitar. But my favourite class was definitely harmony.

Raph: I started playing the saxophone when I was 8 and played in big bands, and also taking classes for jazz. I then took on the drums a few years later and played in 4 or 5 rock bands in my teens.

We both studied music and played in bands before heading to electronic music.

What is the EDM scene like in Belgium and how has it progressed?

The scene is quite big in Belgium. It is a small scene, but a very well educated scene. It really depends where you go, but there are some historical clubs like the Fuse, or Cafe D’Anvers, but you’l find a lot of places in Belgium with some of the best producers/dj playing there on a regular basis. I even think some of the US legends came to Belgium first 25 years ago.

What is it like working with Large Music as a label?

We are so happy to have collaborated with Large. Its definitely our family and we cannot imagine ourself not working with Jeff from Large. Good vibes always, and motivating considering we hit 2 x #1 record with them.

“Move Me” was be featured on EDM Charts, Vol. 144. Describe the track and how it all came together.

Well to be honest, we were trying to make a track, and it was not working at all. So we decided to take a break, go eat some pie or chocolate, and when we came back, the track was done in 30 minutes…..(the idea). It is quite incredible how things like that happen, you are stuck struggling for hours, then all of a sudden, boom you have a track 🙂

What are some upcoming productions/projects you are working on?

We have a remix for Vanilla Ace coming in April, and another original coming on Nervous records. Then we have some unreleased material and a new EP for Large later down the year. We are also continuing our series of free downloads. When we find an acapella we like from some other records, we like to remix them.

Who are your biggest role models and why?

Good question!

Alex: Michael Jackson for its overall talent : dancing, singing, writing, composing and work with only the best. Jamiroquai for their music and live energy. Funk and Disco is a major part of my music background but they manage to keep this vibe current. Chick Corea because he’s such a great jazz pianist. Todd Edwards, that I was listening to back in 1995 for his different take on UK House with chopped up vocals and cool chord progressions.

Raph: Michael Jackson, Jimmy Hendrix, Beegees, Deep purple… Because i loved their music and they made me want to go into music 🙂 I don’t really know why else.

What is your set up for producing music, such as Ableton, live instruments, etc…

Ableton Live, a midi keyboard, Rhodes and piano from Native Instruments and any cool sample of stabs and vocal we stumble upon.

That’s about it 🙂

What is your hottest track at the moment?

I think Move me on Large, and our remix of Whitney Houston – I’m Every Woman.

What is on your rider for live performances?

A DJM 800, 2 CDJ 2000 (how original, we know), a blasting sound system and party people ready to dance for 2 hours straight minimum ! Water. A lot of water. And 4 éclairs au chocolat, thos really nice pastries with cream and chocolate icing on top 😀 Keeps us inspired ! (joking – although it would make us so happy! haha)
