Gemma, it’s great to be able meet up for an interview and see what’s been going on in your musical career! Tell us where you are from and how you got into music?
Hey, thanks for having us!
I have been doing music now for a long time – I released 5 studio albums to date. I had a breakthrough in to the world of film and TV when I was asked to record a version of Wicked Game for a series called Pretty Little Liars. I released the track on my own label and people just started doing bootleg remixes. One of the remixes came to the attention of Above & Beyond’s label Anjuna Beats. I licensed the track to them for Vol 11, and it’s become popular all over the world. Then when the guys were recording the album We Are All We Need, they asked if I would be up for collaborating on Counting Down The Days. They rest as they say …is history !
This is the first time we’ve featured Gemma on EDM Charts. What track have you been most proud of the past 12 months, that you’ve done vocals on and why?
I’M A BIG FAN OF JAMES CHAPMAN WHO GOES BY THE NAME ‘MAPS’. SO I ASKED HIM IF HE WOULD LIKE TO DO A REMIX OF MY SONG ‘CHASING’ FROM MY NEW ALBUM. WHAT HE DID TO THAT SONG COMPLETELY BLEW MY MIND. IT IS BY FAR THE MOST EXCITED I’VE BEEN ABOUT A SONG IN A LONG TIME.
What is it like working with with one of the industry’s best labels: Anjunabeats?
IT’S BEEN AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE. NOT ONLY BECAUSE ABOVE AND BEYOND ARE SO TALENTED BUT ALSO BECAUSE THEY ARE SUCH LOVELY PEOPLE TO BE AROUND. MY OWN MUSIC IS MORE ROCK/FOLK BASED SO IT WAS GREAT TO WORK IN THE EDM SPHERE FOR THE FIRST TIME. NOW I’M HOOKED.
The Judah Remix of “Counting Down the Days” was featured on EDM Charts, Vol. 154 as the track of the summer. Describe the track, how it all came together and what it inspired?
It’s one of the many awesome remixes that you have heard of the track. It came about because they offered the track out through Beatport for fans to do their own remixes. I love the Judah Remix because it is so completely different from both the album version and the club version. I have yet to ask Above & Beyond when they are going to remix a track off my album !!!!
If you could work with one artist on a track, outside of the “EDM” genre AKA non DJ, who would you love to collaborate with and why?
I REALLY LOVE ALEXI MURDOCH’S FOLK MUSIC SO IF HE WAS UP FOR WRITING A SONG WITH ME THAT WOULD BE PRETTY COOL.
What are some upcoming productions/projects you are working on?
I’m writing songs for other artists at the moment and also working on songs for my next album. My passion is to write songs so I’m delighted that there are so many new opportunities to get my music out there.
What’s your favorite event you’ve performed at live?
Glastonbury for sure! I couldn’t believe how thousands of people knew my songs esp when I have never really had a break through chart hit. It’s amazing and means more to me because it’s word of mouth.
What is your hottest track at the moment?
Of other peoples music? It would have to be a song called Red Eyes by a band called The War On Drugs. It’s a throw back to all that was great about eighties music but with a fresh modern twist.
A fun question for you. What’s your favorite vacation destination and why?
Kauai, which is one the more underdeveloped of the Hawaiian Islands. It’s very rustic which is it’s charm. Stunning beaches, friendly people and fresh local produce. Not too happy the size of their spiders!
Where can fans discover more about you and get your music?
