1. GARETH EMERY, CHRISTINA NOVELLI “CONCRETE ANGEL” [JOHN O’CALLAGHAN REMIX] (GARUDA) Release Date: 2012-3-12#4_gareth

Rating: ★★★★★

Genre: Trance

Origin: UK, Ireland

Description: There’s no argument this year that hands down “Concrete Angel” is the top trance track of 2012. This specific remix by Irishman John O’Callaghan adds a separate piano bridge and is sped up to O’Callaghan’s tailored style. Christina Novelli’s vocals are perfect and help bring the track to life. There’s no wonder why Gareth Emery is consistently in top #20 grouping of DJs.

1. PAUL VAN DYK, ADAM YOUNG “ETERNITY” [QULINEZ REMIX] (VANDIT) Release Date: 2012-11-19

Rating★★★★★

Genre: Progressive House

Origin: Germany

Description: Initially off the album release this summer “Evolution”, “Eternity” gets remixed by Swedish producers Qulinez. The track is an example of hybrid progressive house. It is a bit more upbeat than the original, packed full of energy. Adam Young of Owl City does a brilliant job on lyrics. It is a match made in heaven.

WEEKLY TOP ELECTRONIC CHARTS: JANUARY 2012, VOL. 33

4 Jan

The first week of 2012 brings EDM fans some great electro house hits and even a little trance. Axwell, Ingrosso and Steve Angello prove why they’re a force to be reckoned with; even when they dabble in a new genre. Sander van Doorn continues his global dominance as he teams up with Bloc Party. Nadia Ali and Starkillers are the new Bonnie & Clyde of the EDM scene.

1. SWEDISH HOUSE MAFIA, KNIFE PARTY “ANTIDOTE” [ORIGINAL MIX] (VIRGIN UK)

Release Date: 2011-12-18

Swedish House Mafia and Knife Party make it to the top of the mountain on this week’s countdown. This is a huge electro house track. We get to see the progressive house world of SHM butt heads with the hard electro style of Knife Party, made up of two members from Pendulum, most notably Rob Swire.

It just seems the beat doesn’t stop on this track. They even have what I refer to as a little “Mord Fustang Wobble” in the track to hit the deep bass. The limited and tainted vocals add some more depth to the track.

In addition, if you haven’t checked out the explicit music video to “Antidote” you must do so immediately. Just envision yourself in the middle of video game, while you try to heist a strip club filled with Japanese gangsters. Easily one of the best EDM music videos; or most creative for that matter.

2. SANDER VAN DOORN, KELE, LUCY TAYLOR “WHAT DID I DO WRONG” [ORIGINAL MIX] (DOORN RECORDS)

Release Date: 2011-12-26

This is progressive house at its finest. Sander van Doorn really outdoes himself on this one as he lines up an all-star team to compliment him on this track with the likes of Kele (of Bloc Party) and Lucy Taylor. The track itself is essentially van Doorn’s remix of Kele’s original version, which was more drum & bass oriented.

The piano-like notes and stretched out synths are what give the track its progressive feel. It is interesting how Kele’s and Taylor’s vocals blended in so well on the remixed instrumental when they were hardly touched or adjusted. This track has a chance to unseat “Love Is Darkness” as van Doorn’s biggest pop oriented progressive house hit.

3. STARKILLERS, NADIA ALI “KEEP IT COMING” [ORIGINAL MIX] (SPINNIN RECORDS)

Release Date: 2011-12-26

Starkillers and Nadia Ali. Haven’t we heard this combo before recently? This massive single follows up their 2011 smash hit “Pressure”. It is obvious that this is a pair that should definitely keep producing together.

It is amazing to see how Ali has progressed over the years. You can look back all the way to her bold start with iiO with “Rapture” to “Call My Name” this past year with Sultan & Shephard. She’s a unique player to the EDM scene, as she shows her longevity and wide array of skills.

Starkillers do what they do best on the instrumental by producing dirty house beats. This has big room feel all over it. A perfect track right now for any DJ to drop at the club.

4. MORD FUSTANG “WE ARE NOW CONNECTED” [ORIGINAL MIX] (PLASMAPOOL)

Release Date: 2011-12-19

Estonia’s finest, Mord Fustang, is one of EDM’s more well liked new artists to the scene. It is extremely difficult to believe that this kid started out in Eastern Europe, producing tracks made entirely on Fruity Loops.

This track is great for electro house. It eerily reminds me of his previous single “Milky Way” as either the synths or some other element are nearly duplicated.

What this track shows us is uniqueness. It proves that electro house does not have to be so interconnected to dubstep; but rather just be itself.

5. BJORN AKESSON, ALY, FILA, JWAYDAN “XANTIC” [ALY & FILA VS BJORN AKESSON  REMIX] (FUTURE SOUND OF EGYPT)

Release Date: 2011-12-19

Is it not the year of Sweden or what? Akesson is starting to make a name for himself with his new track “Xantic”, after following up his highly respected “Painting Pyramids” track which made Armin van Buuren’s “A State of Trance”. Xantic, for those wondering, hints at the color yellow, which may be some sort of allegory to the sands of Egypt?

Egyptian superstars Aly & Fila as well as stunning vocalist Jwaydan team up on this remix. Aly & Fila bring the epic “build & drop” to the track. Jwaydan shows why she’s one of the best in the game right now, by making this a top vocal track. Maybe in 2012 Akesson can crack the DJMag Top 100.

WEEKLY TOP ELECTRONIC CHARTS: OCTOBER 2011, VOL. 23

1. COLDPLAY “PARADISE” [FEDDE LE GRAND REMIX] (Toolroom Records)

Release Date: 2011-10-17

Yes, guess what? Coldplay actually made #1 on my countdown this week. We can mainly thank Fedde Le Grand however for why this song is even on the list. It is a nice collabo, and fairly similar sounding and reminiscent of “Save The World” by Swedish House Mafia. This is a huge hit, that will surely dominate the radio waves.

2. SPENCER & HILL, NADIA ALI “BELIEVE IT” [CLUB MIX] (Wall Recordings)

Release Date: 2011-10-03

Spencer & Hill and Nadia Ali stay high up on the list for another week. Top vocalist of the year, without a doubt, goes to Nadia Ali. She has single handedly established herself as the voice of EDM. It is only a matter of time before we will probably unfortunately hear her on a pop track with someone like Timbaland or 3OH!3. Regardless, this song is a great combo of progressive house and a little bit of wobble from dubstep.

3. DIRTY SOUTH, THOSE USUAL SUSPECTS, ERIK HECHT “WALKING ALONE” [ORIGINAL MIX] (Phazing)

Release Date: 2011-10-19

Dirty South strikes again with the assistance of Those Usual Suspects from Australia. I’ve never heard of Erik Hecht, but he does a unique vocal layover, that blends perfectly with this progressive house bomb. There is definitely a lot of short and snappy synths on this track, with help make it very upbeat. A unique track at that, which is definitely worthy of this spot.

4. TRITONAL, CRISTINA SOTO “STILL WITH ME” [CLUB MIX] (Air Up There Recordings)

Release Date: 2011-10-10

First off, I’d like to say that I cannot believe the trance duo Tritonal is from the US! Absolutely unheard of in the trance scene. Fantastic track done with the assistance of Cristina Soto. This is under trance, but if anything, it give me a very airy progressive house feel. Tritonal reminds me of a poor man’s Above & Beyond.

5. BT, ADAM K ”TOMAHAWK” [ORIGINAL MIX EDIT] (Armada Music)

Release Date: 2011-09-30

BT…you are ridiculous! This is a great track that fuses hardcore dub step with electro house. Eerily in style to that of Mord Fustang’s “Lick The Rainbow”. If you haven’t had a chance, check out BT’s Laptop Symphony on Sirius XM. A great show, with great commentary. What can I say, I wouldn’t expect anything less from BT; I mean the guy is literally a certified genius.

Gootnist’s Weekly Top House/Electronic Tunes: October 2011, Week 22

1. SPENCER & HILL, NADIA ALI “BELIEVE IT” [CLUB MIX] (Wall Recordings)

Release Date: 2011-10-03

The duo from Germany have come up with probably one of the best unknown hits of 2011. Nadia Ali once again comes through on this track with her mesmerizing voice. This is a dirty electro house track that is brought into perfect equilibrium with the vocals provided by Ali. It is good to see Spencer & Hill get great exposure on a track that doesn’t happen to be a remix, which is their typical forté.

2. GREGOR SALTO, CHUCKIE “WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS” [CLUB MIX] (Cr2 Records)

Release Date: 2011-09-05

Ok, I’m pretty sure everybody knows the Dirty Dutch sensation Chuckie for his remixes and hits. The true question is do you know Gregor Salto? Well if you haven’t it is ok, as he hasn’t blown up quite yet. Suprise, suprise…he’s another Dutch artist however. The song is very cool with the lead in with Vietnam-era style guitar followed up with minimalistic vocals. It truly is the perfect song for all the clubs in Vegas.

3. PROK & FITCH, JUAN KID “STAR GUITAR” [FESTIVAL MIX] (Toolroom Records)

Release Date: 2011-09-26

Star Guitar stays on the countdown for a second week in a row. Prok & Fitch have hit this remix of a classic out of the park. The upbeat track keeps you listening, while yet you’re intrigued by the electric guitar integration. Great track to start wrapping up 2011.

4. ZEDD “SHAVE IT” [ORIGINAL MIX] (OWSLA)

Release Date: 2011-10-04

Well, it appears on this countdown as if we’re having a contest between Germany and Holland. Zedd, hailing from Germany, makes this week’s list with some electro house. Recently signed under Skrillex’s new label, Zedd showcases his flexible style, integrating forms of house and dubstep. Great song, that has quickly risen up the charts.

5. ARTY, TANIA ZYGAR ”THE WALL” [ARTY REMODE MIX] (Enhanced Progressive)

Release Date: 2011-09-26

Arty, the Russian wonder kid, stays on the countdown for the second straight week. This as an absolute ridiculous remix of his own song. It’s a bit of a darker beat to be on top of the charts in trance right now, but it is unique. The track has a great integration of guitar in background. It is very continuous and catchy.
